Mile 3 Malham Cove 746'
Mile 3 Malham Cove! Site of peregrine falcons and picnics. Filtering down from various sink holes above, through a system of tunnels and cracks in the limestone, water finds its way to a long gape at the cove's foot and spills out into daylight. Thus Malham Beck is born and on this day after heavy rain, even here it is already carrying a load of silt - presumably washed down from 500 feet above. Following REALLY heavy rain, the water sinks are overwhelmed by rainwater and this becomes an actual waterfall.
Some Yorkshire Folk, without thinking, will tell you that this is the source of the River Aire. It does not yet bear that name but it is an iconic place and is uppermost in people's minds when they think of this area.
