The River Aire flows behind the Mativ factory complex. As long as I can remember it has been there but I first knew it as Johnson & Johnson, in my imagination the World epicentre of cotton bud manufacturing. Small towns and villages usually establish around water and crossings and Gargrave is no exception. However, unusually in this small town, there is clear evidence of an economy that is more diverse than farming or servicing tourists and wealthy commuters.
