Mile 16 Carlton 300'
Mile 16 Carlton 306’
I was getting a bit weary by now on the walk from Gargrave to Skipton and I can’t say I enjoyed this section but it's not about finding lovely lanes and out of the way paths: the mission is to reach the Mile Points. This one involved a fast, narrow road that touched the river in places. Occasional benches provided rest. Anything will feel comfortable when you’re tired: never choose furniture late in the afternoon.
The banks on River Right (looking downstream) are lined with willow and reeds whose roots stabilise the banks whereas the River Left bank is fairly nude and crumbling bit by bit into the river. No sand martin burrows here as the accommodation will only be temporary.
