At this point I am well and truly in the eastern reaches: I have passed beneath the M1 motorway bridge where the graffiti is vibrant and interesting in a how-did-they-get-up-there kind of way.

The River Aire is now flowing into the Land of Open Cast Mines. The workings closed years ago and are now landscaped: the spoil heaps turned into wooded hills and the craters filled with water and life. These ponds drain into the Aire through fenced-off outlets.
